In season 6, episode 17 of Roofing Road Trips®, Chris Underwood and Jamie Atkins from Sherwin-Williams Roofing Solutions joined Heidi J. Ellsworth to talk about new products coming from Kool Seal and UNIFLEX, two brands that are a part of the Sherwin-Williams' family. During their conversation, they mentioned five different product 2024 releases that are pushing silicone systems and sealants forward.
This product is getting launched under both brands and works with existing silicone product lines. At its core, this stops the oils that come from asphalt to bleed through a coating and tarnish the clean aesthetic of a finished coating. Chris explained, “This will prevent the bleed-through and also help to provide another layer of protection over our substrate. Because of the strong inter-coat adhesion between the two products, we'll get excellent adhesion with our silicone, our primer over top of those substrates.”
Under the UNIFLEX brand is a product line called Silicone 44. This product is most commonly used in commercial and warranty projects and is known for “ponding water resistance, excellent flow and leveling, exceptional permeability rating and UV resistance.” Prior to 2024, this product only came in gray and white. The news that Chris and Jamie brought for the interview was that it is getting launched in new colors – tan and yellow! Chris explained the color choices, “Yellow so you will have a clear understanding of where you should walk on the roof and then the tan for aesthetics.”
Under the UNIFLEX brand, they have both low solid coating in addition to the traditional high solids. Chris explained, “Low solids gives you a lower-priced option and still get all the protection and performance of silicon.” And they are expanding beyond the UNIFLEX line and creating a low solids silicone that fits into the existing Kool Seal Tundra brand.
In addition to this new addition to their product line, Kool Seal is introducing three new professional-grade base coats this year! Jamie explained, “The first one is our premium base coat. This is great for use over metal, concrete and polyurethane. The second professional grade base coat is our SPE, single-ply elastomeric. This is perfect for weathered EPM, Hypalon and TPO. Our third base coat, professional level, is our MB. This is for smooth built-up roof, modified bitumen and granular cap sheets.”
And last but not least, they are also introducing a new professional-grade rust inhibitive primer to help avoid corrosion and damage. Jamie explained a bit of the design process for all of these products, “It was just looking at what our customers need and trying to find what will satisfy those needs.”
