As the sun set on the skyline of Los Angeles, the aging roof of this hotel stood weather-worn and weary. A steel deck with lightweight concrete, the existing roof system was a slag rock embedded in a coal tar pitch built-up system. Time had taken its toll, revealing blisters, ridging and deteriorating coal tar pitch after years of enduring sun exposure and rainstorms. The roof began to leak into the building below. Trusting APOC’s technical team, the crew and customer worked together to find a successful restoration solution.
APOC recommended that the A/C curbs be raised to create proper clearance from the roof deck. The customer also agreed to install new sheet metal pans on top of the A/C curbs before they were reset. They filled existing pitch pans with APOC #501 Neoprene to ensure there was no cracking due to possible movement.
The system used was the AM2-FG-MF-PE-252. The crew power washed the existing roof after the slag rock was power vacuumed off the roof. They then applied a flood coat of APOC #300 asphalt emulsion over the existing roof system at 9-12 g/100 square feet. A flood coat helps level the roof where rock is not completely removed. After the flood coat cured, they applied Monoform, 9-gal emulsion + 3 lbs chopped glass per 100 square feet. Once that layer was cured, they applied two layers of 40” polyester mesh, each layer set in 4 gal of APOC #300 asphalt emulsion and allowed to cure. Next, APOC #252 Sun White Acrylic coating was applied at 3 gal/100 square feet. The coating was applied in two passes at 1 1⁄2 gal per pass. The base coat was grey, the topc oat was white.

Since the building was 14 stories in the air, there was not much access to the roof. The APOC restoration system is perfect for this type of job because the product can be pumped from the ground up to the roof without having to crane or carry anything up top. There was no downtime, which allowed the hotel to operate under normal everyday conditions. Taking the rock off the roof and applying APOC #252 Sunwhite Acrylic cooled the surface temperature of the roof 60 degrees.
