Sustainable Roofing Reimagined

Duro-Last Sustainable Roof

By Cayden Wemple.

For more than 20 years, Duro-Last® has been committed to instilling sustainability into the roofing industry.

In an industry that inherently produces a lot of waste, it’s important for companies to be aware of that waste and take action to cut back on it. For over 20 years, Duro-Last has been committed to diminishing the negative effects that the construction industry has on the planet.

Duro-Last's founder, John R. Burt, had the resourceful idea of “reimagining old PVC roofs and manufacturing excess into resilient flooring, walkway pads and concrete expansion joints.” Through the company’s “Recycle Your Roof” program they have recycled more than 80 million pounds of PVC material. And when it’s inevitably time to replace a Duro-Last roof, the company offers a “take back” program which takes the material that would have otherwise been completely disposed of and gives it new life by turning it into other Duro-Last materials. “Since 100% of mechanically attached PVC roofing material can often be recycled, we are able to transform it into new products such as Roof-Trak® walkway pads, ProFlex® concrete expansion joints and Protect-All® flooring,” according to Duro-Last.

In addition to recycling, sustainability is also a top priority. Duro-Last materials are “certified sustainable.” The company has worked tirelessly to verify their materials’ sustainability. They also have NSF/ANSI 347 certification for several of their products. According to nsf.org, the NSF/ANSI 347 certification is the, “sustainability assessment for single-ply roofing membranes is the leading consensus standard for evaluating and certifying sustainable attributes of single-ply roofing membranes over their entire product life cycle.” The following Duro-Last products have achieved NSF/ANSI 347 certification:

  • Duro-Last® Membrane – NSF/ANSI 347 Gold

  • Duro-Tuff® Membrane - NSF/ANSI 347 Silver

  • Duro-Fleece® Membrane - NSF/ANSI 347 Silver

  • Duro-Last EV Membrane - NSF/ANSI 347 Conformant

  • Duro-Last X™ Membrane - NSF/ANSI 347 Conformant
