Navigating the challenges of liquid-applied roofing systems

Polyglass Navigating the challenges of liquid-applied roofing systems
August 27, 2024 at 9:00 p.m.

By Jesse Sanchez.

Polyglass expert discusses unique hurdles in liquid-applied roofing market.

In this episode of CoatingsCast, host Karen Edwards sat down with Polyglass’ Brady Kolden to discuss the complexities of liquid-applied roofing systems, sharing insights from his extensive experience in the industry. This episode offers a deep dive into the technical and practical challenges that contractors face with these systems, providing valuable knowledge for both industry veterans and newcomers.

One of the main challenges Brady highlights is the hands-on nature of liquid-applied roofing systems. Unlike traditional roofing materials like TPO or PVC, liquid-applied systems require a more technical installation process. "It's a technical installation. We don't supply a finished good. We supply buckets to build that membrane on the roof," Brady explains. This means that a thorough understanding of the products, substrates and installation practices is crucial for ensuring a successful project.

Brady also expressed the importance of a tailored approach for each roof. "No two roofs are the same even if it's a modified roof. You have different penetrations, you have different detailing that needs to be done. It's a hands-on approach sale rather than just out the door," he says. This individualized attention to detail ensures that the unique characteristics of each roof are addressed, leading to more effective and long-lasting solutions.

Furthermore, Brady discusses the essential role of honesty and realistic expectations in the sales and installation process. He recounts an instance where he had to advise a client against using a certain product due to the roof's condition and the client's long-term goals. "Originally, they wanted the product to be a ten-year type of system. We sat down and looked at Google Earth so we could see the images, see what the roof was doing, see what the standing water looked like. And from there, we decided that if the customer wants a 10-year roof, we can provide an option.,'" Brady shares, illustrating the importance of setting realistic expectations and maintaining transparency with clients.
