In a new episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Kristin and Tony Case, the owners of Hi-Peak Staffing Solutions, stopped by to talk to Megan Ellsworth about working with a specialized recruiter to help you during your hiring process. These recruiters’ roles are to connect top-tier talent to leading companies across the industry. This enables employers to find long-term, qualified candidates for whatever role they are looking to fill, whether it’s a field supervisor, sales rep or something else!
But before you can start hiring out of the pool of candidates, you have to pick a recruiter to work with. Tony explained that specificity is the key to finding the right recruiter for you. He shared, “You want to find a recruiter that is industry specific. That's probably the number one thing that we see people don't do and struggle because of it. There's a lot of big box recruiters out there with thousands of employees that recruit anything under the sun.” The problem with these giant recruiters is that everything becomes a numbers game for them. They have a metric to meet, and they are just sending people to meet that goal, not necessarily because they think they are the most qualified or best fit.
So, when you start looking for a recruiter, you want to pay close attention to the recruiter’s track record and their candidate pool. Tony explained, “What does their placements look like? Are they familiar with our specific roles that we're working with? Then you want to look at the recruiting firm's candidate pool. Again, if you go back to those big box recruiters, they might have a candidate pool of 55,000, 60,000, hundreds of thousands. How many of them are specific to your industry?”
This can all feel very overwhelming, but Kristin shared some tips about how to make these evaluations. She explained, “Word of mouth does get out. People will know who recruiters are, and if they don't, they may be able to poke around and figure out some of that information. But also looking at recruiter’s job boards. Every job Hi-Peak has posted on our website is going to be related to the roofing industry, so you see our specialization.” From there, it’s key to read testimonials, referrals, etc. to get a good perspective on that track record that Tony mentioned. This might feel like a lot of research and work, but once you have built a good relationship with a recruiter, you can keep working with them for years! That means handling the extensive vetting process once to find a recruiter rather than multiple times whenever you need to hire a new employee!
