Roof coating recommendations from a decades-long pro

Polyglass CoatingsCast Roof Coating Recommendations
May 23, 2024 at 12:00 p.m.

By Evelyn Witterholt.

In our latest episode of CoatingsCast, we spoke with Brady Kolden from Polyglass about his perspective on the roof coatings industry.

Although the roof coatings industry is seeing a surge in popularity, there are those who have been in this sector of roofing for a long time. In a recent episode of CoatingsCast, we spoke with Brady Kolden, the national coatings business development manager of Polyglass U.S.A. Inc., who imparted some of his roof coatings wisdom to us.

Brady has been working in the industry since 1995. He got his start in the house paint and commercial coating business. He then went on to work for United Coatings for 20 years, helping them with roof coatings, concrete stains and wall systems. In 2014, he was brought on to the Polyglass team and has been with them ever since.

“A gentleman by the name of Todd Homa gave me the opportunity to come over to Polyglass and help them build something new,” Brady said. “Our coatings line was just kind of getting rolling at that time and I accepted the challenge, and I enjoyed my time here. It's been a great company to work for.”

With his decades of experience in the roof coatings world, Brady has seen all the challenges and advantages of this versatile material. Unlike other types of roofing, coatings are not a finished good, like TPO or PVC. Brady told us that fluid-applied systems are more hands-on and require a deep understanding of how to install them.

“We supply buckets to build that membrane on the roof,” he said. “I believe you have to understand the products, you have to understand the substrates that you're dealing with and the installation practices. And from there, once you have a grasp on that, you can help the contractor make the right recommendation for the roof.”
