In this episode of CoatingsCast, host Megan Ellsworth brings listeners into a captivating discussion with Amanda Paterline and Brad Shreve of AkzoNobel. The discussion explores the vital role that coatings play in the metal roofing industry, shedding light on the expertise and innovation behind AkzoNobel’s renowned products.
Amanda, the commercial marketing manager for North America Coil and Extrusion, kicks things off by sharing a bit of history. “Our coil coatings business unit was founded in 1888 under predecessor Hannah Paints,” she reveals, establishing AkzoNobel’s deep-rooted legacy in the coatings industry. This historical perspective sets the stage for understanding the company’s evolution and its significant impact on modern metal roofing.
Brad, a polymer engineering and technical support expert, takes us further into the world of metal roofing coatings. He describes the versatility and resilience of AkzoNobel’s key products — TRINAR, CERAM-A-STAR and POLYDURE. “We have the flexibility to tailor our resins to the given needs of a specific market, which makes us the player we are in the market,” Brad explains. This adaptability is crucial for meeting the diverse demands of different climates and applications, ensuring that their coatings provide both aesthetic appeal and long-lasting protection.
Amanda outlines how AkzoNobel’s coil coatings are factory-applied to guarantee consistent color, gloss and a uniform finish, which are critical for high-quality production and seamless installations. This process includes performance testing for adhesion and scratch resistance, ensuring that the coatings withstand the challenges of transport and installation.
Shreve emphasizes the critical role of protection in paint performance. “Protection, protection, protection. I mean the paint is the first thing our eyes see. It's generally what the customer cares about the most,” he says. This focus on protection represents the dual purpose of AkzoNobel’s coatings — not just to enhance the visual appeal of metal roofing but also to safeguard the underlying structure from environmental damage.
