CCSI - John Kenney - Transforming inexperienced managers into roofing industry leaders

CCSI Influencer John Kenney says training great leaders involves a comprehensive approach that combines technical training, leadership development, mentorship and continuous feedback.

Training managers with less experience to become effective leaders in the roofing industry is essential for your business’s success. Great managers not only ensure smooth daily operations but also contribute to the overall growth and sustainability of your company. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you develop inexperienced managers into strong leaders.

1 - Comprehensive onboarding

Begin with a robust onboarding program that introduces new managers to your company’s mission, values and goals. They need to understand your company culture, key processes and expectations for their roles. During onboarding, familiarize them with the organizational structure and clarify the roles and responsibilities of each department. This foundational knowledge will help them navigate the company efficiently and build effective relationships across departments.

2 - Industry-specific training

The roofing industry has its own set of challenges and technical requirements. Managers must have a solid understanding of roofing materials, techniques, safety protocols and project management. Offer industry-specific training through in-house workshops, online courses or collaborations with roofing associations. Encourage them to obtain certifications from reputable organizations to ensure they are up-to-date with industry standards.

3 - Strengthen communication skills

Effective communication is critical in management. Provide training on how to communicate clearly and professionally with team members and clients. Focus on developing active listening skills, delivering constructive feedback and maintaining open and honest communication. Role-playing and scenario-based training can help managers practice these skills in a controlled environment, preparing them for real-world situations.

4 - Encourage decision-making and leadership

New managers often need to build confidence in their decision-making abilities. Involve them in decision-making processes and present them with hypothetical challenges to solve. This practice helps them develop problem-solving skills and gain confidence in handling complex situations. Allow them to lead small projects or teams to gain hands-on experience in delegating tasks, managing time and making strategic decisions.

5 - Implement a mentorship program

Mentorship is a powerful tool for developing inexperienced managers. Pair them with experienced leaders who can provide guidance, share insights and offer support. Regular mentorship sessions allow new managers to learn from their mentors’ experiences, navigate challenges more effectively and refine their management style. Encourage a culture where seeking advice and feedback is welcomed, fostering continuous learning and growth.

6 - Regular feedback and performance reviews

Constructive feedback is essential for growth. Conduct regular performance reviews to evaluate progress and identify areas for improvement. Use these sessions to set specific, measurable goals and track their progress. Recognize and celebrate their achievements to motivate them while addressing weaknesses with targeted training or resources. This approach helps managers understand their strengths and areas for development, providing a clear path for growth.

7 - Promote continuous learning

The roofing industry evolves with new technologies, materials and regulations. Encourage managers to stay informed about industry trends through workshops, webinars, conferences and industry publications. Promote a culture that values continuous learning and professional development. When managers see that growth is a priority, they are more likely to invest in their development and bring new ideas and innovations to the company.

8 - Lead by example

Outstanding leadership starts at the top. Demonstrate the qualities you expect from your managers—integrity, dedication, empathy and resilience. When managers see these traits in action, they are more likely to adopt them in their leadership style. Leading by example is one of the most effective ways to train and inspire your team.

Training less experienced managers to become great leaders involves a comprehensive approach that combines technical training, leadership development, mentorship and continuous feedback. By investing in their development, you not only enhance their capabilities but also ensure the long-term success and growth of your roofing business. With the proper support, even the most inexperienced managers can evolve into exceptional leaders.
