Understanding the need for quality edge metal systems

Mule hide Understanding the need for quality edge metal systems

The importance of edge metal and its role in roofing performance has never been clearer.

In this RLW® webinar, Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with Nick Musel and Hank Bonney from Mule-Hide to talk about the role of edge metal in roof durability and performance in severe weather.

Edge metal is a vital component in the performance of flat and low-slope roofs, and its significance continues to grow in today’s challenging weather environment. Designed to protect the edges of roofing systems, edge metal not only enhances durability but also plays a crucial role in preventing water infiltration. Its effectiveness lies in its design and manufacturing processes, which must meet several testing criteria to withstand varying wind pressures across different regions.

When constructing roofs, understanding local environmental conditions is essential. For instance, designing roofs in hurricane-prone areas like Miami requires wind resistant and durable solutions compared to roofs built in regions with milder climates. This is where the advantage of using manufacturer-produced edge metal becomes clear. As Hank Bonney, territory manager at Mule-Hide Products, points out, “By having that manufactured and tested edge metal system, it gives building owners security and peace of mind. And by having that secured at the edge, you don't have to worry about it blowing off and allowing that water to infiltrate that roof system.”

Manufacturers test their metal components to ensure they meet design pressures, minimizing the risk of human error during fabrication. This results in products that are easier for installers to work with and are specifically engineered to withstand local conditions. As Nick Musel emphasizes, “The first key component is looking for that edge-to-edge warranty, so everything is covered. Wind and severe weather attack the perimeters and corners—the weakest points of the building—so we need to make them the strongest.” By using quality metal that is pre-measured and pre-punched for installation, roofing systems can achieve greater reliability and protection against the elements.

The strength of a building’s roofing system often depends on the edge metal, as many catastrophic roof failures begin at the edges. With the increasing frequency of severe weather events, the importance of a well-designed edge metal system has never been clearer. It not only safeguards the entire roofing assembly but also provides essential protection against wind uplift, particularly at the perimeters and corners of buildings. Ultimately, investing in high-quality, tested edge metal enhances the longevity and performance of flat and low-slope roofs.
