Charting the rise of spray foam

Charting the rise of spray foam
April 17, 2025 at 6:00 a.m.

By Emma Peterson.

Learn about the recent growth of the spray foam market and the challenges it is overcoming.

At the beginning of February 2025, The Coffee Shops™ crew headed southeast to Daytona Beach, Florida for the 2025 SprayFoam Convention and Expo, hosted by the Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance (SPFA)! The incredible show included 45 educational breakout sessions and an expansive 80,000-square-foot exhibit hall. If you were there, you might have seen us in that exhibit hall on the CoatingsCoffeeShop® soundstage!

Heidi J. Ellsworth kicked off that soundstage with a live episode of CoatingsCast® with Gabe Goepfert, Everest System’s VP of sales and marketing. The conversation started on the topic of the growth of the spray foam industry. This is something that Gabe has had a first-row view to as he has been with Everest since 2016.

One of the big turning points he identified was during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. He explained, “When we went into COVID there were a lot of supply chain issues. And the spray foam and coating industry became very adaptable, even more so than traditional roofing products... We had a chance to really do a lot of great work when a lot of the traditional supply chains were down.” An example of the type of work that Gabe is referencing is the use of spray foam on new construction, rather than the traditional use of it as just a retrofit option. This exposed a whole new portion of the roofing market to spray foam and the opportunities it presents, leading to the growth we are seeing today.

But with that growth comes challenges. The biggest one that Gabe sees today is simply a game of numbers. He explained, “The number one limiting factor to the foam and coating industry growing is contractors. We need more well-trained and ambitious contractors.” This is where organizations like SPFA and the SprayFoam Convention and Expo really shine. As Gabe put it, “These organizations are super important because it brings all of us together to help support the contractor, because ultimately, whether it's an Everest job or any other manufacturers, every job that goes well is good for the whole industry because it represents what can be accomplished through these spray foam systems.”
