In a new episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Karen Edwards met up with Sam Beiler from Equipter, John Kenney from Cotney Consulting Group and Jason Reisman of Eustis Roofing to talk about the role of equipment in growing your company. Sam grew up in the Equipter world as his dad started the business in the early 2000s with their “flagship product, the self-propelled drivable dumpster called the Equipter 4000 today.” Jason is the CEO of Eustis Roofing and also grew up in the industry. Last but certainly not least, John is the current CEO of Cotney and has over 45 years of experience as a contractor prior to his current consulting position.
John first shared a bit of larger context to Jason’s experience, noting that labor retention is harder than ever today. He explained, “Depending on the part of country you're in, it is a two to three retirement ratio to every one person coming into the industry.” The only way to address this is to encourage more young people to join the industry, something that can be challenging. He pointed to three main factors in attracting people to your company: safety, quality and productivity.
These three factors are all centered around the experience of work, something that Sam has thought a lot about as an equipment manufacturer. He explained, “We have to remember we're humans, and we like to do things and we don't like to do things. At Equipter, we look at it from the perspective of ‘how many of the negative experiences from the job site as a whole can we eliminate?’” One of the worst parts that Sam’s dad found in his time as a contractor was the hard manual labor of moving debris off a roof and keeping the surrounding area clean. And so Equipter was born, with the ability to rise to the level of the roof and move around the jobsite.
This has greatly improved the experience of working on a job site, something Jason has seen firsthand. He explained, "If your employees see that you're willing to invest in equipment for their future or their safety or the production side of it, they're going to want to work for you.” Not only does investing in machines like Equipter make the job easier and more efficient for your crews, but it also keeps your homeowners happy as the job site is cleaner and cleared out faster.
