In a recent episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Mule-Hide Products' training initiatives take center stage. Host Heidi J. Ellsworth welcomes Chris Kuykendall and Kyle Stavish from Mule-Hide to discuss the importance of industry-leading training programs.
Kyle, Mule-Hide's national training and business development manager, outlines the company’s history and commitment to training. “But our claim to fame is really... It's what we're talking about today, it's our training, it's our people and it's the interaction that we have in the marketplace with our customers,” he says. Mule-Hide’s training program promotes continuous education, adapting to evolving industry standards and addressing the persistent labor shortage. “We're very, very well-rounded in being able to train new people, being able to train existing people again and always make sure that we're at the forefront of training,” Kyle adds.
Chris, a territory manager, shares his perspective on training's practical aspects. He explains the significance of relationship-building in both formal and informal training environments. “Mule-Hide's main goal, and outcome, and training is that they view our team at Mule-Hide as a resource, as a relationship that's going to help them improve,” Chris explains. He notes the importance of effective low-slope roofing education as foundational to understanding roof coatings. “Not all roofs are good candidates for coating, sometimes they have to be re-roofed,” he clarifies.
The discussion shifts to the specifics of Mule-Hide’s training centers, including their locations and state-of-the-art features. Mule-Hide currently operates three centers in Wisconsin, New Jersey, and Florida, with plans to expand to Texas and Arizona. Kyle describes the centers’ organization, safety and technology upgrades, which ensure a seamless training experience. “When you're there you're learning and you're being educated the whole entire time,” he asserts.
Chris appreciates the centers' efficiency, noting, “The fact that I know where the hand welders are… speeds things up. It allows us to focus less on setup and more on that contractor and their questions.” He also discusses the role of field training, which happens in various settings, including on-site at contractors’ locations. “We pride ourselves on trying to walk as many, if not more, roofs than anybody in the industry,” he states.
