Metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) are crucial for ensuring sustained growth and profitability, but how can you establish effective KPIs for your company and leverage technology to track and utilize this data? The latest episode of CoatingsTalk® dives into these questions with insights from industry experts Kari Aderhold of Aderhold Roofing, John Kenney from Cotney Consulting Group and Zach Carpenter from Jobba Trade Technologies.
Tracking metrics gives businesses the tools to assess their strengths and weaknesses in real time, enabling teams to make informed decisions quickly and effortlessly. Kari emphasizes the importance of detailed tracking, sharing, “We track everything. We assign job numbers to every project, even the smallest service jobs. These are linked to detailed cost codes for labor, materials and overhead. This approach gives our company visibility into each job’s performance versus our estimates.”
This visibility allows her business to identify areas of success and opportunities for improvement. Whether addressing unexpected delays or improving resource allocation, real-time data allows them to respond proactively instead of reacting after the fact.
While tracking metrics is essential, focusing on the right KPIs ensures those metrics are meaningful. For many contractors, the concept of KPIs can feel overwhelming, but John simplifies the process: “Don’t overcomplicate it. Five to ten KPIs are more than enough. For example, let's take the field holding accountability. Three major things you want to track are safety, quality and production. If you have good safety metrics, your quality metrics are good, production takes care of itself. Those three metrics alone from your field are going to tell you the health of your company.”
By prioritizing impactful metrics, you can avoid data analysis paralysis and concentrate on insights that drive profitability and operational success.
Zach highlights a common challenge: “Many clients want to track KPIs but don’t know where to begin. That’s where technology like Jobba comes in, connecting everything and making the data useable.” Modern tools simplify the process of collecting and visualizing data. Kari emphasizes the importance of actionable reporting, adding, “There’s so much data in day-to-day operations that it can become overwhelming. The key is to harness that data through dashboards and reports that make sense. Technology helps us use this information to grow our company.”
As John notes, every metric must serve a purpose: “Metrics must tie to the profitability and success of your company. If a metric doesn’t move the ball forward, it’s not worth tracking.”
