Why roof coatings are the future

Everroof Why roof coatings are the future

By Evelyn Witterholt.

We heard from Todd Farr of EVERROOF about why more contractors are turning to coatings.

These days, building owners are looking to save a few bucks while still having a durable and reliable roof system. That is why many of them are turning to roof coating systems and roofing contractors are on board. In a recent episode of our Roofing Road Trips podcast, we spoke with Todd Farr, the national sales manager for EVERROOF, about the hot topic of roof coatings and the latest trends he’s seeing in this sector of the roofing industry.

Todd told us that these days, more roofing contractors understand that their customers need a cost-effective roofing solution. Rather than completely tearing off a building’s roof and installing a new one, building owners are favoring a fluid-applied restoration system instead. He also tells us that contractors often favor this type of system because it takes less labor to install.

“It's a win for the contractor. Basically, it's a very easy solution to implement,” Todd said. “They don't have to have as much crew as they normally would on a different solution, and if they need to fill in themselves, they can do that as well.”

Todd recommends that contractors test the products themselves beforehand with pull tests. This involves putting a strip of fabric onto the existing roof substrate, then applying a fluid-applied product on top of it and letting it cure. After a few days, you apply some more product onto it, let that cure then you do a pull test with a fish scale. This way you can see how durable a specific roof coating is.

“We're hearing just glowing, glowing reviews from our contractors and they're saying, ‘Hey, we've tested your products. We didn't take your word for it. We tested it and you guys are the best of the best,’” Todd said. “I would encourage everyone, before you go into production, do a pull test on your substrates and just test different brands and just see who comes out ahead.”
